Another chance comment on Twitter got me in touch with @FriedBaseballATL regarding a news aggregation site for the Atlanta Braves. Being a huge Braves fan, I jumped at the change to help out on this site. I was able to turn the detailed mock-up provided by the site owner into a workable design rather quickly, but sorting all the content required several custom loops and some other interesting background coding.
The “Upcoming: What’s Next” section is a multi-field custom post type with multiple custom taxonomies providing the names of the pitchers. The lineup card content block on the center column was another learning exercise. The posts would not line up over a static image and recreating the design in CSS wasn’t as detailed so I used a dynamic CSS class to apply a background to each item.
Widgets areas in all three columns allow for the end user to insert static or dynamic content, as well as advertisements. A fourth widget area in the header above the logo allows the user to insert a 728×90 header advertisement. This was a fun project that was turned around quickly in order to launch well within the MLB 2011 season.
