Superboy Prime, Cyborg Superman, and the Anti-Monitor re-appear in DC’s Recently Released Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special #1

It’s seems that every few months there is a new, big thing in the comic book industry (at least Marvel and DC). After one event ends, another had better start soon or readers will disappear. Marvel quickly followed their Civil War with World War Hulk (and a similar slew of ancillary titles). DC’s Infinite Crisiswas followed by 52, which is being followed by Countdown.

And, just when I thought I was out, they sucked me back in…

With one image, the just released Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special #1 revealed that it had more to do with Infinite Crisis (and other events) than I think anyone imagined. That one image above encompasses 20+ years of stories I’ve read (both recent and long ago). I think there is something to be said for forging ahead and changing everything the way Marvel is doing with their Civil War related fall-out. But, nostalgia feels good and DC is firing on all cylinders right now and I can’t wait to see where it leads.

This was one of my favorite episodes. The ones with Mxyzptlk were always cool, because he could basically do anything. I’ve got to locate the one where he uses a type-writer to place the SuperFriends into different situations.

Batman and Robin take the Wonder Twins to a 3-D movie. Mr. Mxyzptlk, however, decides to pester the SuperFriends by pulling them into the movie. Using his magic movie camera he can make the SuperFriends do or say anything he wants.

I’ve posted before about my love for Captain Carrot. There’s something about that comic that just reminds me of being a kid. I only had a few issues of the series, the first of which I’m sure came with a “comic collecting starter kit’ ordered from the JC Penny (or Sears) Christmas Wish-book in the early 80’s. So it’s not a love from being over-exposed.

I suppose it’s the same love I feel for many of the comics that started my collection. I got the same feeling when not too long ago I located a copy of Fantastic Four #210 in a quarter bin. Flipping through its pages, I remember specific panels and was fascinated to read it again. I think that’s part of the reason I like Captain Carrot so much now. Back then it was just a “funny” book. Now, I read it and I see all the references it was making to the current comics of the time. It’s like watching The Simpsons, where kids find something funny and adults get a completely different picture. It’s a Meta-Text to the DC Universe and other comics of the time.

The origin of the team came about when Superman was investigating a strange phenomenon causing the citizens of Metropolis to begin acting like their primate ancestors. He soon found a ray streaking at him from a strange barrier surrounding the Earth, which prompted him to use a meteorite as protection. When the ray struck the meteorite, Superman and the meteor’s fragments were sent from Superman’s native dimension into Earth-C. There, Superman met several of the world’s residents, who had gained superpowers when they were struck by the various meteor fragments.

The animals and Superman soon teamed up to stop the source of the ray (which was also causing the denizens of Earth-C to behave like their non-anthropomorized animal ancestors), which turned out to be the old Justice League villain Starro, a sentient starfish, who was launching his de-evolution assault from the Earth-C universe’s Pluto. After defeating the villain, the animals decided to stick together and form the Zoo Crew, and Superman returned home.

Anyway, to get on with the point of this long winded post, DC Comics announced that the full run of Captain Carrot will be available in their Showcase format on September 26. For those unfamiliar, the Showcase format is a phone-book size collection of comics (usually 20-25 issues), printed on newsprint in black and white. For the past few years DC has been releasing their older comics (Superman, Batman, Justice League) in these collections. Marvel has something similar with their Essential line. Both lines are a great way for new and old fans to pick up full runs and large sets of story-lines or issues for very little $$. Both collections retail for $16.99 and can usually be found online for $10-$12. That’s a lot of bang for the buck. Don’t pass them up because of the black and white printing either. Before the 90’s, comic art wasn’t as detailed, so the simpler illustration style reproduces beautifully without to color, with some volumes looking better than their color counterparts.

YouTube and IMDB.com have pulled the trailer and the only thing I can find it now is the official site. They have a promo video that shows some of the trailer footage. So go check that out and come back for my comments.

Meh…That’s about all I can say. I was really looking forward to this. After seeing this, I’m not that excited. I’ll still check it out, but won’t be expecting much.

When DC Comics announced they were going to produce animated Direct-To-DVD features of several of their properties, it sounded like a win-win idea. More cartoons based on great stories, what’s not to like? If this first trailer is any indication, I’m not so sure.

First, what’s with the saying it’s based on a “graphic novel” instead of a comic book? Does that make it more acceptable. Come on, it’s Superman. Everyone knows Superman is a comic book character. The original story was spread out over many of DC’s Superman related titles for over a year. It just bothers me. Why pretend to be something you’re not?

Second, the animation looks too much like the Superman Animated series. This is just me being a fanboy, but why not have it part of that canon? Why go to the trouble to produce something that’s supposed to be different. Link it to the animated series, but provide enough information that new viewers won’t be lost. I understand they’re aiming this at a more “adult” audience, but I guarantee Carter will want to watch this the minute he see the DVD case or preview.

Oh well, I’ve vented and now I feel better. Just watch the trailer and form your own opinion.

Justice League of America - Complete Cover shows all previous teams

It's a common occurrence in comics, rebooting or restructuring a team. Members die, leave, marry off, or etc. to be replaced by news members. It helps to bring in new readers and add new dynamics to books that may be getting a little stale.

Having said that, I really like the line-up of the newest incarnation of the Justice League of America. A few years ago, DC Comics realized that for the JLA to work, it needed the "big guns" of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. There were several failed or lackluster attempts to have a league without those characters and it just felt like another team book and not the JLA.

Now for a little commentary on the characters selected (working clockwise, from the right):

Minus the big three, the rest of the line-up is nice. I like the addition of Red Arrow (formerly Arsenal or Speedy). One of the original League's members was Green Arrow and having his side-kick take his role in this new versions plays upon DC's history and shows that time does pass–to an extent–in the DCU.

The new Hawkgirl (Kendra Suanders) is also a welcome addition. The Hawkman solo title switched to Hawkgirl and has been horrible for about a year now, so it's good to see the character being written well in a good book.

Red Tornado and Black Lightning are two off-and-on League members that deserver a good shot at the big leagues. I'm interested to see how they resolve the current storyline with the Red Tornado becoming human. Maybe Black Lightning will get a new name to go with his new status quo.

Vixen is another great choice. She was given the spotlight on a few episodes of the JLU animated series last year and with an increased role in the League and a re-definition of her powers, she could be the character with the most to gain.

Hal Jordan, the Silver-Age Green Lantern, hasn't been a part of the League since the 90's when he was in the Justice League Europe title. The character has been through many changes in the past decade (from villain/mass murderer to dead, spirit, avenging ghost). A 2005-2006 revamp and return has brought the character hack to his roots as a fearless Air Force test pilot, but left him at odds with Batman on a few occasions.

Skip over the big three and end with Black Canary. It's the only character that I'm a little disappointed to see. Not because I don't like her, but I really like where they left the character at the end of her 100-issue arc in the Birds of Prey series, and I just don't see that lining up in the JLA. I've heard rumors of where she may go in the future, so we'll see how it all plays out.

Overall, I'm really liking the new incarnation of the Justice League. It moves a little slow compared to my other favorite title, Justice Society of America, but it's grand scale super-heroics done correctly. I could also do without the Ed Benes art. I'd like someone more "comic-book" style or classic style. It's not stopping me from enjoying the book. Having said that, the art at the top would be a great poster. Nice way of showing all the previous versions of the League, while spot-lighting the new version.
