Swamp Thing Season 1 and 2 Cover ArtTVShowsOnDVD have announced that Seasons 1 and 2 of USA Television’s Swamp Thing series will be released on DVD on January 22, 2008. I never thought this series would be released. I created my own DVD set of this show a few years ago and it was one of the harder shows I’ve tried to locate. I went through several people until I found decent quality VHS recordings. After all of that, the quality was still lacking, so I’m really looking forward to this release.

66 Simpsons Movie References

UPDATE: I’ve updated the links in the post below for the Simpsons movie references to point to Actualidad Simpson. It seems that is the original site for the images I posted about. The other site had copied the content from there. The Actualidad Simpson site has a better collection of images and has them organized by film. Just translate the site to English and have fun.

I’ve always noticed a few cinematic references in episodes of the Simpsons, but the list of Simpsons Scenes and their reference movies is just too cool. I never realized how many there were. The sad part is for all the ones pictured, I remember at least one more. Hopefully someone will put together part 2.

On a similarly titled note, the 19th season premier last night (He Loves to Fly and He D’ohs) referenced this summer’s The Simpsons Movie in the intro. A destroyed Springfield was shown being cleaned up and rebuilt and Spider-Pig makes an appearance in the couch gag at the end of the intro.

While I don’t watch the show on any sort of regular basis like I used to, it still cracks me up any time I manage to catch a few minutes. Almost 20 years later and it’s still funny (maybe not as much) and still packed with pop-culture references (more of which I now catch).

Swamp Thing Television Series Ad According to TVShows on DVD, that seems to be the case. Shout Factory, the same group that produced the amazing Freeks and Geeks DVD set has supposedly acquired the DVD rights to the 1990 USA Network series. Based on the DC comics character, the series took the basic idea of the character and spun it into a genre heavy series that thrived on a threat/monster of the week theme.

I remember watching this show off and on the last few years of high school. It was just a few years before that I had gotten into the classic Swamp Thing series from DC. Writer Alan Moore took a stock horror character and transformed him into one of the most interesting books that DC had at the time. Rick Veitch continued the trend after Moore left, but the series floundered for direction after Veitch abruptly left. The comic had the character increasing in power to near god-like levels and it was hard to find anyone or anything that could challenge the character.

Several attempts have been made to bring the character back, but all have failed. With the success of the 1985-1996 series and the fact that it help found DC’s now popular Vertigo line, DC editorial have been hesitant to remove the character from his horror filled roots and return him to the super-hero filled DC universe proper (despite the recent, constant pleas from DC editorial). I say let them have the character. Past history and success is keeping the character tied to a formula that a few writers had success with, but others have not been able to duplicate in over a decade. Give someone else a chance to see what they can do with Swampy.

This fall, the CW network (kidsWB) will premiere the Spectacular Spider-Man, the most recent animated series featuring everyone’s favorite wall-crawler. There’s a bootleg of the preview footage from San Diego posted at Enewsi.com and it looks good.

It’s looks kid friendly, which is ok by me. There’s also an energy to the footage that I don’t think that’s been in any of the previous cartoons (unless you count the MTV version from a few years ago). Looks like I’ll be TiVo-ing another ‘toon this Fall.

Burger King is running a promotion with the Simpsons Movie and has release the Simpsonize Me webiste. This site allows you to upload a photo and it will be rendered as a Simpsons character. Unlike the feature on the Simpsons Movie site, this is supposedly an automated process. Notice I say supposedly, as I couldn’t get it to work. Having said that, the results that Michael Calore of Wired Blog Network achieved were pretty accurate. I’ll keep trying and see what it produces.

There’s no denying the appeal of the Simpsons. Although some would argue the show has faded from its glory days, anyone that’s ever been a fan of the show could likely recite a few favorite quites. Everyone knows “D’oh” and it was honored by being included in the Oxford English Dictionary. An interesting side note about D’oh – it’s always written in the scripts as “annoyed grunt.”
